Peanut Butter Swirl French Toast (Stale Sourdough Redemption)

Some flavors taste like childhood.
Some flavors taste like comfort.
And some — like this one — taste like the warmest hug you’ve ever eaten.

Today’s recipe in the Wasting Sourdough Is a Sin series is Peanut Butter Swirl French Toast, and it is rich, creamy, salty-sweet heaven.

Imagine warm, golden slices of Diablo Dough sourdough covered in a melty peanut butter drizzle that pools into every ridge of the toast… a few roasted peanuts sprinkled on top for crunch… maybe even some banana slices if you’re feeling classic. It tastes like peanut butter pie and French toast teamed up to make your morning better.

It’s nostalgic.
It’s cozy.
It’s indulgent without being complicated.

And the peanut butter swirl?
It photographs like a dream.

Instructions

1. Make the custard.

Whisk eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla, sugar/maple, and salt until smooth.

2. Make the peanut butter swirl.

Stir warm peanut butter with powdered sugar/maple and milk/cream until pourable and glossy.
It should ribbon beautifully off a spoon.

3. Dip the sourdough.

Soak slices for 10–15 seconds per side.

4. Cook the French toast.

Warm butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Cook slices 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown with lightly crisp edges.

5. Assemble.

  • Drizzle peanut butter swirl generously over warm French toast

  • Add a handful of chopped peanuts for crunch

  • Add banana slices if you have them

  • Optional: finish with a touch of honey or maple syrup for shine

  • Dust with powdered sugar if you want a sweeter finish

Serve warm — the peanut butter swirl thickens slightly as it cools, making every bite ridiculously good.
